What is The Gray House?
The Gray House has an interesting origin for its name, often prompting questions about its significance. Initially, the name was quite straightforward: the house was gray, making it easily distinguishable from others on the street. Located at the prominent intersection of Fairmount Ave and Commonwealth Ave, giving directions became simple—just refer to “the gray house on the corner.”
As we considered a potential name change, we recognized how fitting the name truly was. Many individuals who sought refuge at the sober living house found themselves in a “gray area” in their lives, facing critical choices. They could continue down the path of addiction, alcoholism, or a life marked by past felonies, parole, or probation, or they could choose to pursue a Christ-centered existence, striving to become contributing and productive members of society. This latter lifestyle had remained elusive for so many for far too long.
Since our inception, we have had the privilege of assisting more than 200 residents on their journeys toward personal growth and healing. An impressive 82% of these individuals have made transformative choices that significantly impact their lives. Throughout this process, we have celebrated 42 moments of salvation and 61 heartfelt rededications, marking important milestones in their progress.
Our commitment to fostering enduring relationships means that we remain in touch with the majority of our residents long after they complete their stay. We strive to create a supportive network that lasts for years, helping them navigate their paths and continue their journeys with confidence.
RESIDENT LIFE
At any given time, our home accommodates an average of five residents, each contributing to the vibrant community we strive to create. To maintain a clean and welcoming environment, every resident is assigned specific chores that promote shared responsibility.
Recognizing that our residents come from a variety of backgrounds—each with unique perspectives and expectations regarding communal living—we make it a priority to support one another in fostering an atmosphere of peace and harmony. When conflicts arise, we address them thoughtfully, offering conflict resolution services, life coaching, and mentoring that empower residents to develop positive coping skills.
In addition to household responsibilities, residents are encouraged to engage spiritually by participating in church services and Bible studies. We thoughtfully align each resident with a church community that will provide guidance, discipleship, and encouragement, helping to strengthen their faith journey and nurture their spiritual growth.
